The Problem:
Within your Webmaster Tools section, it says the number of broken links on your website is 124. In truth, this just isn't the case, you've checked!, and you are certain that your links are good. Google has even has an added feature that allows you to check the referring page that sent you to the 404 error, and you laugh because even those referring pages are old non-existent pages, and if clicked will take you to even more 404 errors. Where is Google getting it's data?! How can you make this go away?! Could this affect your ranking?!
My Findings:
Google's Broken link checker isn't literally analyzing your website, and especially not in real time. All these broken links are links indexed and cached within the Google's search structure. So, in truth, there are 124 broken links, but their source isn't your webpages... it's Google's. What can you do: Pray for a thorough site crawling and re-indexing to come your way soon.
BTW, check out the Xenu Link Checker Tool I feature in my links section, it is a good tool. Also, I use a great site-map generator that also tells me my broken links.
